Stara Pazova, a multicultural community where Serbs and Slovaks have lived side by side for centuries, inspired Tijana Grumić’s ethnographic project Houses Speak. The photographs document houses distinguished by ceramic-tile façades, a characteristic feature of the local Slovak community, recognizable for their vibrant colours and ornamental patterns. At the time the photographs were taken, in the spring of 2020, as many as 77 such buildings were recorded in Stara Pazova alone. By 2026, that number had already decreased by eight. In addition to Stara Pazova, these houses can also be found in Stari Banovci, Belegiš, and Golubinci, forming a valuable testimony to the region’s vernacular architecture and the cultural identity of its communities.
